PLANNING / DEVELOPMENT
Charmouth was actually known to the
Romans. Its distinction is that it was a planned settlement, originated in the
13th Century.
The layout of the original medieval
village extends from the village bridge to the Old Lyme Hill. The street forms
the historical centre of the conservation area.. The conservation area was
formed in 1972 to preserve the historical character and unique features of the
village.
Within the conservation area there
are a variety of architectural styles. There is 33-listed building in the
village, dating from the 15th Century to the 19th Century.
Some of the original early buildings have been concealed within later
alterations and extensions.
