RECREATION / AMENITIES

The Charmouth playing fields covers an area of approximately 12acres and provides a large range of facilities, including football, cricket, tennis bowls and a childrens play area. During the summer months the pavilion is manned with a attendant providing refreshments.

114 households use the playing fields occasionally for general recreation; the childrens play area by 106 of the households.

The Parish Council owns approximately 3miles of foreshore that stretches from Evans cliff in the east to Canary Ledges the far side of Black Ven in the west. Over 55% of households use the beach, cliffs and footpaths regularly.

The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre was established in 1985 after a public inquiry into fossiling practices between Charmouth and Lyme Regis.

The centre was formed under the direction of the Parish Council, Charmouth Society, WDDC and the County Council, as an interpretation centre for the coast and its environment.

The Charmouth Heritage Centre is used occasionally by 136 of the households and 60.000 visitors.

Charmouth contains a surprising large number of activity groups, approximately 32 in total, this must signal a very healthy community. Households identified several external groups of which they are members in Lyme Regis and Bridport. The most popular group in the village is the gardeners, with 41% of the households being members. 31% belong to the friends of the Heritage Coast Centre. The Charmouth Society and the Pavey Group are supported by 24% of the households.

The most used building in the village group activities is the village in Wesley Close.

80% of the households consider that there is a need for a community hall.

There were comments that the village could support only one hall and others that the community hall should be larger. Some commented that they would not wish to see the old WI hall closed. A large number would support fund raising for the community hall.

Over 47% think there is a need for a skateboard park and a multi - sport hard surface area.

Although some considered Charmouth was well catered for with amenities, others saw the need for residential parking, a swimming pool, a good village restaurant and a better café at the foreshore.
