HOUSEHOLD DETAILS
The total
number of persons responding to the survey was 630. This constitutes 50% of the
village population. 552 were over the age of 18, a total of 47% of the electors
of the parish.288 males 342 females of which only 67 were born in the village.
The survey
indicates that there are fewer males and females between the age of 0 -24 than
there were in the survey of 1990.
That 45% of the
population within the survey were over the age of 65, higher than the survey
1990. This is a very high proportion when compared with the 27% average in
Dorset.
349 were
retired: 55% of the number of persons in the survey.
262 persons
came from outside West Dorset to retire to Charmouth : 41% of the survey 54% of
the households. Within the last three years 68 families had moved home, within
the last ten years142 had moved home.
The longest
period any one had lived in Charmouth was 88 years.
17 children
attended the Charmouth school.
15 Households indicated that they
had no vehicle. All other households owned 350 cars or vans. This indicates that
21% of the households own more than one vehicle.38 of these park on the road.
This does not indicate the total number of vehicles parked on the road. A survey
carried out on the 14th February 2003 at 23.30 on the Street
Axminster Road and Higher Sea Lane counted 61 parked vehicles.
74% indicated
that a car was essential to their daily life and gives them a better quality
life.
17 persons were
confined to their homes because of a disability. (Comments) There was a need for
residents parking. Cars were felt very necessary, as buses do not run from the
main thoroughfare or in the late evenings.
Nearly half the
population in the survey has a computer of which 75% are connected to the
Internet.
Most rated
Charmouth as a good village community, a village that contained good services
such as shops and medical facilities. Several commented that Charmouth was a
lovely place to live and should not be spoilt, with concerns over second homes.
