EMPLOYMENT

 Employment in Charmouth has change over the years; many now work in the building industry and tourist related occupations, very few if any work in agriculture.

Employment opportunities within the village itself have fallen.

 130, 24% of the population within the survey are ion some form of employment, either part time of full time, while 9 were employment. Of those in employment 49 are self- employed and 33 are employed within a tourist related occupation. Within the village itself 24 are full -time employment and 26 in part -time employment.

In the survey of 1990 222. 39% of the population of that survey was in some form of employment 64 worked full -time and 36 part -time in the village.

The present survey would indicate a fall of 50% in employment within the village, with a fall in those seeking employment.

 There has over the last 12 years been a closure of two public houses/hotels, one public house, one hotel a bank the local petrol station and a residential home.

The “Villager Stoves” Charmouth largest employer relocated to Axminster.

 65% considered that there should be more opportunities for employment in the village. The majority considered that new small business opportunities should be developed within existing and converted premises within the village.

 

To the question;

Which employment possibilities do you think would be suitable to Charmouth?

 51% considered small businesses, small craft workshops, and 46% considered retailing and tourist industry. 40% agriculture and horticulture with 32% light industries.

 Where do you think these types of employment could be set up in Charmouth?

 60% considered within existing building, 54% in converted premises

29% on sites outside the village boundary, 19% in new premises within the village.
